Abstract

Operating room air conditioning systems, in accordance with Minister of Health Regulation No. 40 of 2022, must use a standard of 25 Air Changes per Hour (ACH) to maintain sterility. This study evaluates whether this standard is sufficient to handle the cooling load. Through a case study on a standard operating room (120 m³), a comparative analysis was conducted between the maximum cooling capacity that can be provided by the 25 ACH airflow and the real heat load (from occupants, lighting, and 7.0 kW medical equipment). The results show that the maximum sensible heat absorption capacity of the room (13.2 kW) exceeds the estimated peak real heat load (8.66 kW). This resulted in a sensible thermal capacity surplus of 4.57 kW, while the room load utilized only 65% of the available capacity. In conclusion, the 25 ACH regulation provides a highly reliable thermal safety margin, ensuring that the cooling system capacity is fully capable of handling high heat load fluctuations from modern medical equipment
